    Nel corso della sua carriera di attore cinematografico, iniziata nel 1978, ha conseguito quattro nomination al Premio Oscar: una come miglior attore per il film Pollock (2001) e tre come miglior attore non protagonista per i film Apollo 13 (1996), The Truman Show (1999) e The Hours (2003). Nel 1999 si è aggiudicato il Golden Globe per il miglior attore non protagonista in The Truman Show. Nel 2003 ha vinto il premio IOMA come migliore attore non protagonista per The Hours.
