.James Earl Jones
Figlio dell'attore Robert Earl Jones (interprete ne La stangata), che abbandonò la famiglia prima che nascesse, e di Ruth Williams, venne cresciuto dai suoi nonni materni. Jones possiede, nella sua genealogia, antenati irlandesi, Cherokee e africani. Attorno all'età di cinque anni si è trasferito a Dublin nel Michigan. Inoltre sviluppò una forma di balbuzie grave, e si rifiutava di parlare ad alta voce.
Rimase muto volontariamente per otto anni, fino al raggiungimento della scuola superiore. Ha dichiarato di essere riuscito a superare il problema grazie a un insegnante, Donald Crouch, che scoprì di come James fosse dotato nello scrivere poesie e lo aiutò ad aprirsi dal suo silenzio. Jones in seguito venne promosso dalla University of Michigan. Lavorò come ufficiale dell'esercito in Alaska verso la fine degli anni cinquanta. La sua prima moglie fu l'attrice e cantante Julienne Marie, nata a Toledo, in Ohio, nel 1933. Assieme non ebbero figli, e successivamente sposò Cecilia Hart sua attuale moglie nel 1982. Da lei ebbe un figlio, Flynn Earl Jones.
